When a large diameter plastic pipe, whether it is a 30-inch municipal water main, a 48-inch storm drainage pipe, or a large-scale agricultural irrigation line, is removed from service or rejected during production, it presents a size reduction problem that most recycling equipment cannot solve. The pipe is too large to fit any standard granulator hopper. Even most general-purpose industrial shredders are not designed for the hollow geometry, the length, and the wall thickness of large diameter pipe.
According to the DOT 2023 Gas Distribution Annual Report, 55.4 million plastic services and approximately 840,550 miles of plastic pipe mains were installed in the United States by the end of 2023. With PVC pipes designed to last 50-plus years and HDPE pipes with service lives extending to 100 years, the infrastructure installed in the 1970s through 1990s is now entering replacement cycles. That replacement activity generates substantial volumes of large diameter pipe that needs to be recycled rather than landfilled.

P-Series Machine Dimensions
The engineering drawing below shows the full side profile and end view of the P-Series Pipe Profile Industrial Shredder with labeled dimension references A through H. These configurations are available in rotor widths from 800 mm to 1,500 mm to match your pipe diameter and throughput requirements. Contact Virtus Equipment for the exact dimension table for your specific rotor configuration.

Why Large Diameter Pipe Is a Processing Challenge
The recycling industry handles small and medium diameter pipe reasonably well with general-purpose shredders. It is the large diameter material, anything approaching or exceeding 400mm, where standard equipment runs into the same set of problems repeatedly.
The Size Problem
A 30-inch (762mm) or larger pipe will not fit the hopper of any standard granulator or most general shredders. The only alternatives without a dedicated pipe shredder are manual cutting to reduce the pipe to manageable pieces, or rejection of the material entirely. Both have real costs.
The Hollow Geometry Problem
Unlike solid plastic scrap, hollow pipe resists compression-feeding. When forced into a standard shredder at an angle, it can rotate, shift, or jam rather than feeding through the cutting zone consistently. This behavior wears out machine components and frustrates operators trying to maintain throughput.
The Wall Thickness Problem
Heavy-wall large diameter pipe, particularly pressure-rated HDPE and thick-wall municipal PVC, represents a significant load on the cutting zone. Machine motors stall or overload when the feed rate is not precisely controlled. The hydraulic ram on a purpose-built pipe shredder eliminates this problem by managing the feed rate throughout the cut.
The Length Problem
Standard pipe arrives in lengths of 6 to 12 meters. No standard shredder or granulator has a hopper that accepts 6-meter pipe lengths. Manual cutting is the only alternative without a machine designed with a horizontal trough long enough to accept the full pipe. The P-Series pipe shredder’s horizontal trough accepts pipes up to 6 meters in standard configuration.
Pipe Types and Their Recycling Value
| Pipe Type | Common Diameters | Primary Applications | Recyclability and Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE Pipe | 20mm to 1,600mm+ | Water distribution, gas, irrigation, conduit | 100% recyclable, retains strength after reprocessing. High-value post-industrial feedstock for new HDPE pipe production. |
| PVC Pipe | 12mm to 1,200mm+ | Water supply, sewer, drainage, conduit, telecom | Recyclable via mechanical process. Post-industrial scrap from production is highest-value. Requires dust extraction during shredding due to chlorine content. |
| PP Pipe | 16mm to 1,200mm | Industrial chemical handling, drainage | Excellent recyclability. Clean post-industrial material re-enters extrusion as high-quality regrind with minimal degradation. |
| Large Diameter Multi-Layer Pipe | 400mm to 2,000mm+ | Municipal infrastructure, water mains, large-scale drainage | Requires dedicated processing. Wall thickness and diameter place it outside the range of all equipment except purpose-built pipe shredders. |
What the U.S. Pipe Recycling Infrastructure Looks Like in 2026
The picture is clear. Recycling programs for PVC and HDPE pipe are actively expanding in the United States. The infrastructure bottleneck identified by processors is equipment capable of handling large diameter material. Plastics News reported in July 2025 that Return Polymers, one of the leading U.S. PVC recyclers, specifically noted that 30-inch large-diameter white pipe received at their Texas facility exceeded the capacity of on-site equipment and had to be transferred to their Ashland, Ohio facility equipped to handle oversized rigid PVC. That is the processing gap that a dedicated pipe shredder like the P-Series was designed to fill.
The P-Series: What Makes It the Industry Standard
The Virtus P-Series Pipe Profile Industrial Shredder has more than 200 installations worldwide and is used by leading pipe manufacturers across multiple continents. It is described as the world’s first single-shaft shredder capable of handling large diameter pipes up to 1,200mm without pre-cutting. Its availability in rotor configurations from 800mm to 1,500mm wide means it can be sized appropriately for the specific pipe diameter range a facility needs to process.
For post-processing, the shredded pipe material feeds into a pipe and profile granulator that reduces it to the specific particle size required for re-extrusion or sale as recycled material. For PVC applications requiring powder output, a downstream plastics pulverizer completes the three-stage processing line.
